SOLAR Annual Picnic – 2019

Author: Bill Morse

The SOLAR annual picnic took place on June 9th at the Bluebird Pavilion in Island Lake Recreation Area. We feasted on delicious food while chatting with friends from years past and meeting others for the first time. The corn hole boards were popular on a warm, cloudy day. A gear swap was part of the fun and allowed us to sell items we no longer need and buy equipment for future adventures at bargain prices.

Outdoor activity is what we do and this day was no exception. A group hiked 5.2 miles along the Hickory Ridge Trail and enjoyed seeing wildflowers along the way.  Jeff Grossklaus led a 10-mile bike ride, which included going under the I-96 bridge and around Kent Lake in Kensington Metropark.  Leslie Cordova, Jeff Enterkin, Maria Edwards, Mike Banks, and Rob and Judy Mair also participated in the ride. Some of us kayaked at various times, either on the lake or down the Huron River.  For at least one day this spring, the rain stayed away. A great time!

Special thanks to the members who helped plan this event as well as those who arrived early to help set up and stayed around to clean up at the end.
