Allen Duncan, President,

Biography: There are two things about my path to SOLAR that probably hit home with a lot of SOLAR members. First,as a kid and an adolescent I spent a lot of time in the outdoors, primarily through scouting. At that time in my life, we lived in the southeast and I spent many weekends and several weeks in the smoky mountains, on the Appalachian Trail, and exploring western North Carolina and the foothills region of upstate South Carolina. Second, I walked away from that and somehow lost about two decades getting an education and trying to figure out where I fit in the working world (I still don't know).  Show more

Glenn Schultz, Secretary,

Biography: I joined SOLAR as a lifetime member at my first meeting in March 2008 because I sensed good things about SOLAR. I could feel the excitement and passion in the building from the inside out. SOLAR gives me the opportunity to have fun with great people, expand my horizons, and learn new things.  Show more

Mary Donahue, Treasurer,

Biography: Last year I was hiking with a group and one of my fellow hikers told me about the Solar backpacking class he had taken. I peppered him with questions about the club and immediately decided to attend the next meeting. The minute I walked into the Colony Hall I thought this looked like a group of people I could hang out with and signed on the dotted line. That was in January, 2008. Since then I have taken the Fall Backpacking class and the Enjoying Michigan Winter class as well as attending several activities, such as Climb Detroit, moonlight canoe, Chain O' Lakes camping.   Show more

Jennifer McWilliams, Activities Chairperson,

Biography: My fondest memories of childhood are of playing outdoors from sunup to sundown. I lived to play softball and swim during the summer. Winters were spent building snowmen and having snowball fights. I don't remember doing much camping or hiking when younger until I met my now husband in 1988. Together, we went on many car camping trips. We attempted a trip to Manitou Island, but it didn't go very well and we ended up leaving a day early. We realized that we needed to learn more about proper preparedness for lengthier backpacking trips. We were lucky to run across SOLAR on the Internet and joined during our first meeting. Since joining in November 2007, I have taken Basic Backpacking, Adventure Racing, Enjoying Michigan Winters (winter backpacking), SCUBA, and Search and Rescue. I have found a new passion since joining the club and that is Adventure Racing. I never would have had the opportunity to find out how fun and what a rush it is without being exposed to this form of sport through SOLAR. The only adventure racing I had heard of prior to taking the class was the ECO Challenge, and I didn't realize that there were smaller races that I could participate in. I am planning on doing many more races in the years to come.  Show more

Mary Price, Membership Chairperson,

Biography: When my husband, Harry and I joined the club in June, 1994, we probably joined for a different reason than most new members. We have both been very involved in the Boy Scout program (yes, women really can hold leadership positions in Boy Scouts) for many years (in fact that's where we met). Our involvement includes everything from working weekly with our troop to training adult leaders from through out the state.  Show more

Ati Tislerics, By-Laws Chairperson,

Biography: I did some car-camping and dayhiking with my family growing up, and always had the sense that there were more adventures that I was missing out on, but it wasn't until my freshman year at college that I got a chance to try backpacking. You could therefore say I've been backpacking since 1992, if you overlook the fact that I didn't do it again until Jen (my wife) and I joined SOLAR in 2005. (It's not that I didn't enjoy it the first time, life just got in the way...)  Show more

Chuck Smith, Education Chairperson,

Biography: I joined SOLAR in January, 2005. I knew I found the right group for me as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. On the first Tuesday in January, most cars had roof racks, and on them were 3 kayaks and 5 bikes. My kind of people! They didn't think I was crazy when I talked about SCUBA diving the St. Clair River in January. I joined that night.  Show more

Samantha Schafer, Historian,

Biography: I learned about the outdoors when my parents purchased a trailer when I was just four years old. I have enjoyed camping, campfires and sÂ’mores ever since. Between my family outings and traveling with my husband, Gary, I have been camping all over the country. As a youngster, I have been to all the State of Michigan, Florida, Yellowstone NP, Arizona, Texas, and Washington DC. Since I have been married, I have camped in the Florida Keys, Ontario, Smoky Mountain NP, and New Orleans. My husband introduced me to backpacking 20 years ago on our honeymoon. He bought me an external pack (that I only used once) while on our honeymoon to take me on an overnight trip into the SmokeyÂ’s. In 1998, Gary took me to Isle Royale for the first time. I had a great time. We found SOLAR and became members in 2005. Since then, I have taken many classes and gone on many great trips. I have even lead a couple. I find that I learn something new from everyone that I meet in this group.

Debbie Zuchlewski, Programs Chairperson,

Biography: I did not grow up appreciating outdoor sports. It was not until I moved to California that I discovered outdoor activities like backpacking, river rafting, skiing, canoeing, hiking in the mountains. After 20 years of enjoying the beautiful outdoors of California I decided to move back to Michigan. Although I was happy about the move, I thought I was going to miss all of my outdoor activities (since I did not participate in outdoor activities growing up in Michigan I did not realize that Michigan also had many outdoor activities available). Shortly after moving back to Michigan 7 years ago I met someone who told me about SOLAR and all the activities that the club participated in, such as backpacking, dog sledding, bicycling, canoeing/kayaking, caving, hiking, cross country skiing. . . I was ecstatic. I could be in Michigan and still have many wonderful outdoor activities to participate in. I quickly joined SOLAR and since then I have participated in just almost every activity the club offers. I've met many wonderful friends through SOLAR. There are so many activities and classes available through the club, and most of all there are many wonderful people in the club to enjoy the activities with.

Samantha Mozdzierz, Public Relations,

Biography: I joined SOLAR about a year ago and have loved every minute of it! I have met so many great people who share the same passion for the outdoors as I do. Since joining the group last year, I have completed the beginner backpacking class and have gone on a number of SOLAR sponsored trips. I would have to say that the trip to St. John is at the top of the list!   Show more

Jennifer Tislerics, Ray Editor,

Biography: My husband, Ati, and I had car camped several times and enjoyed taking day hikes, but were looking for more adventurous pursuits. I met Mary (Hall) Price through work, and she mentioned this club for outdoor enthusiasts that she belonged to and gave me a brochure. Ati and I showed up at the January 2005 SOLAR meeting and were impressed with the variety of classes and activities available to club members. We joined that night, and I signed up for my first class ("Enjoy a Winter Day"). Since then I've taken basic backpacking, knots and lightweight backpacking clinics, wilderness first aid, basic land navigation and "Enjoying Michigan Winters" (ie: winter camping). Through SOLAR I have gone on countless hikes, snowshoeing, caving in Kentucky and backpacking - my biggest adventure so far was a 2 week backpacking trip along the John Muir Trail in California. I've also been known to snorkel and SCUBA dive.   Show more

Marcia Murphy, Equipment Manager,

Biography: My uncle introduced me to hiking when I was a kid. He and a friend used my parent’s house as base camp for their many backpacking trips. I recall tarps spread out on our front lawn, covered with marvelous gear, which I could only dream about using someday. Before joining SOLAR in 2007, I day hiked and took a few backpacking trips. Since joining SOLAR, I have learned outdoors skills from dedicated instructors and have made a lot of friends who share a love of the outdoors.  Show more

Jeff McWilliams, Webmaster,

Biography: I joined SOLAR in November of 2007. I was a Cub Scout when I was younger, and my Dad always took us out for walks in the woods and car camping when we were little. When I was in Junior High School, my friends and I would spend entire afternoons roaming the wooded areas around where we lived in Alpena, MI.   Show more
